Meet the Coaches
Matt Salerno, Head Coach
Matt has been coaching swimming for more than 20 years and is back for a second summer with the Flippers He coached Villa Aquatic Club for six summers, from 2004 through 2008 and again in 2010. Matt has served as the head coach at Howard University for five seasons from 2009 through 2014 as well as an assistant coach at Davidson College for the 2008-2009 season. Prior to collegiate coaching, Matt was the head coach of Fairfax High School from 2003-2008, capturing three Virginia Northern Region titles and winning the Girls Virginia State Championship in 2008, the first in Fairfax’s history. At the club level, Matt coached Mason Makos for five seasons and Mecklenburg Aquatic Club for one season. Matt graduated from the College of William & Mary and was co-captain his senior season. Matt is currently an assistant principal at Halley Elementary School and is the founder and head coach of Fairfax Foxes Swimming, an affiliate of USA Swimming, as well as an instructor with the Swim with Beth program.
Julia Koczat, Assistant Coach
Julia is back for a second summer coaching the Flippers. She taught swim lessons for Villa Aquatic Club for five summers and is an instructor with the Swim with Beth program and a coach for the Fairfax Foxes. Julia has also been a lifeguard for Villa Aquatic Club for seven summers and a pool operator for one summer. Julia started swimming competitively in 2002 when she attended Cairo American College in Egypt. After returning to Virginia, Julia swam for the Mason Makos for five years, Villa Aquatic Club for six summers and was a varsity swimmer for Fairfax High school for one season. She then moved to Dhaka, Bangladesh where she was a varsity swimmer at the American International School of Dhaka for three years and was captain her senior year. Julia graduated from James Madison University in 2015 with a bachelor’s of science in global justice and a minor in nonprofit studies and has the goal of pursuing a career in International Development.
Christy Talley, Assistant Coach
Christy is back for a second summer coaching the Flippers. She was a swim instructor for four years and dive coach for five years at Villa Aquatic Club. She also coached at Paul VI for two swim and dive seasons, as well as at Howard University for one year. During the school year, she is a first-grade teacher at Halley Elementary School and a coach with the Fairfax Foxes. A native of Fairfax, she currently resides in Manassas with her husband and dog Leo.
